PowerBlock Elite USA
4.5/ 5 our rating

PowerBlock Elite USA dumbbells are the most durable mainstream adjustable dumbbells you can buy: US-made steel plates, a simple pin selector with no dials to break, and expansion from 50 to 90 lb per hand. Owners report using theirs for 6, 15 and 20 years. The boxy cage isn't for everyone, especially for goblet squats and curls, and the 2.5 lb adders can rattle.

What we like

  • Expands to 90 lb per hand, far past dial-style sets
  • Steel plates and simple mechanism, with owners reporting 6–10 years of use
  • Compact: the whole set fits on one stand
  • Strong resale value

What we don't

  • The cage gets in the way of goblet squats, RDLs and pullovers
  • The small adder weights rattle
  • Plates can bend if dropped on an edge

Who it’s for

PowerBlocks are for people who want adjustable dumbbells that will last decades, change weight in seconds, and grow from 50 to 90 lb as they get stronger.

What owners love

  • They last. Owners report 6, 10, 15 and 20 years of use. A 67-year-old owner says their 20-year-old pair is “as good as new”. On r/GarageGym they’re called “the gold standard and the BIFL brand”.
  • Quick changes. Move the pin and lift. Owners say the speed outweighs the downsides.
  • Resale. They sell well used: one owner sold a 90 lb set with stand for $450; others found full sets for $350–$400 on Craigslist.
  • Versus Bowflex. An owner who had Bowflex first sold them for PowerBlocks and recommends PowerBlock “10/10 times”. Another’s Bowflex broke after a drop from knee height.

What owners don’t like

  • The cage. It gets in the way of goblet squats, RDLs, lat pullovers and lifting straps. One critic calls them poorly made because the dumbbell is the same size at every weight.
  • Balance and rattle. Expansion kits can feel unbalanced on curls, and the 2.5 lb adders can rattle.
  • Price versus newer rivals. An owner who sold PowerBlocks for REP’s Pépin dumbbells says the REPs are better, but “not 700 dollars better”.
  • Accessories. The barbell attachment is widely panned.

PowerBlock vs the alternatives

Should you buy them?

Yes, if you want adjustable dumbbells that will outlast you and don’t mind the boxy shape. Start with the 50 lb set and expand later. If the cage puts you off, see our best adjustable dumbbells.

PowerBlock Elite USA FAQ

Are PowerBlock dumbbells worth it?

Yes, if durability matters. Owners on r/homegym and r/GarageGym call them the gold standard and buy-it-for-life; one 67-year-old owner says their 20-year-old set is as good as new, and another has used theirs for over 15 years. They cost more than budget sets but resell well.

How much do PowerBlock Elite USA dumbbells cost?

About $469 for the 50 lb set, $668 for 70 lb and $867 for 90 lb, on PowerBlock's site in October 2026. You can start at 50 lb and add Stage 2 and 3 expansion kits later.

What don't owners like about PowerBlocks?

The square cage. It makes goblet squats, RDLs, lat pullovers and strap work awkward, and some lifters find the dumbbell feels large even at light weights. The 2.5 lb adder weights can rattle, and the expansion weights can feel unbalanced on curls.

PowerBlock or Bowflex?

PowerBlock for durability, Bowflex for a more traditional shape. An owner who had both says they'd recommend PowerBlock 10 out of 10 times, and another says their Bowflex broke after a drop from knee height. Read our Bowflex vs PowerBlock comparison for detail.

Can you drop PowerBlock dumbbells?

Don't make a habit of it. Owners describe them as durable as long as they aren't dropped. They're much tougher than dial dumbbells, but no adjustable dumbbell is designed to be dropped.
